A two-and a half-year-old boy has died after being struck by his family’s car outside his home on Achill Island, Co. Mayo.
The body of the child, from Cloghmore, Achill, was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar today for a post-mortem examination.
The toddler died on Sunday afternoon after being accidentally struck by a car driven by his father.
It is understood the accident occurred in the family driveway around 3.20pm The youngster died despite efforts to save him.
Separately, an 81-year-old man died when he became trapped under the back wheel of a tractor which he had been showing to a friend at his farm at Tubber, Co Clare.
It is understood the man did not mount the vehicle but turned the key while still standing on the ground. It appears that the tractor was in gear at the time and jolted forward when the key was turned.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a postmortem.
Garda technical experts from Ennis visited the scene and the Health and Safety Authority is carrying out its own investigation.
