A 13-year-old boy has been shot in the face with a pellet gun, police said tonight.

The teenager was walking along Camlough Road in the village of Bessbrook, in south Armagh, Northern Ireland, when he was shot.

Police said he was hit under the left eye with what was believed to be a pellet fired from a BB gun.

It is thought to have been fired from a silver Ford Escort which was seen in the area at the time.

The boy was taken to hospital for treatment for swelling under his eye. His condition was not believed to be serious.

Police in the area appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

It was the latest in a number of incidents involving BB guns or air rifles which appear to have been used to deliberately shoot people. During the summer a number of young people were struck by pellets fired at them in the Co Antrim coastal resort town of Portrush.
