The launch of the superleague basketball season is a salubrious though sober affair. They came for the sparkling mineral water, you see. Cristin Reddin, presenter of the new TG4 programme, IBA Beo, is there together with producer Irial Mac Murchu and director Colm Nagle.
The only representative from the Women's Superleague is Caroline Hanly who plays with Killester in Dublin. In her stockinged feet she stands at five foot ten.
As for the men, Duane Jones from South Carolina and Rich Brennan from New Jersey, are six foot six and six foot four respectively. Other tall basketball players spotted were Dublin-based Dave Weaver, from California; Ennis-based Lester Hunt, from Florida who plays for the Clare Jets; and Jonathan Grennell from Swords, Co Dublin. The people to beat this year, it seems, are the Waterford Jets - they've been champions for six seasons in a row. Up Waterford!
