The Hague - Bosnian Serb paramilitary Mr Radomir Kovac, indicted by the UN war crimes tribunal for the gang rape of Muslim women during the 1992-1995 Bosnia conflict, arrived here yesterday and was jailed.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has not set a date for his initial appearance, when he will enter a plea to charges of crimes against humanity, ICTY spokesman Mr Jim Landale said. Mr Kovac (38), was arrested in a pre-dawn swoop yesterday by NATO peacekeeping force troops in Bosnia, in his home town of Foca, 50 km south-east of Sarajevo.
According to the June 1996 indictment, Mr Kovac was a sub-commander of the military police and a paramilitary leader in Foca, which was seized by the Bosnian Serb army between April and July 1992.
He is accused of two counts of rape and enslavement of women, who were held in "brothels" where they were frequently sexually assaulted and forced to perform household chores.
