Croatia extradited Bosnian Croat Mr Pasko Ljubicic, a former military policeman, on today to a UN war crimes tribunal which has indicted him for the murder and persecution of Muslims during the 1992-95 Bosnia war.
Mr Ljubicic, 35, was put aboard a scheduled Croatia Airlines flight to Amsterdam at 8 a.m. (Irish Time).
He handed himself over earlier this month to face trial at the Hague-based court after a year in hiding. His lawyer Mr Tomislav Jonjic said Mr Ljubicic felt confident that he could refute all the charges levelled against him.
The Hague tribunal indicted him for crimes against humanity over his alleged role in atrocities against Muslims in central Bosnia, where he commanded a military police battalion.
The main charge involved a brutal raid on the village of Ahmici in April 1993, during which more than 100 civilians including women and children were murdered and their houses burned down, leading to broader Muslim-Croat conflict.
The tribunal cleared three other Bosnian Croats of the same crime last month. It sentenced the most senior military officer involved, General Tihomir Blaskic, to 45 years in prison but he has appealed the sentence.
