A feasibility study into the merging of Bord Fáilte and the agency in charge of training in the tourism industry, CERT, has been launched by the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation.
The decision to consider the merger follows the creation of Tourism Ireland Limited - a joint venture between the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Bord Fáilte, that will market the island of Ireland as a tourism and hospitality destination abroad.
"We are availing of the opportunity to investigate arrangements for the delivery of tourism policy," a Department spokesman said.
Tourism Ireland welcomed the launch of the study saying co-operation would enhance the development of tourism development.
"Any strategy which emerges that will advance high-quality and high standards of service to our customers, which is critical in an increasingly competitive marketplace, is to be welcomed," said chief executive, Mr Paul O'Toole.
The findings of the study, expected at the end of the month, will be submitted to the Minister for Tourism Mr Jim McDaid who will prepare a report for submission to the Cabinet.
