The Defence Forces have described a suspicious package found outside a school in Dublin today as an elaborate hoax.

Children were evacuated from St Paul's school on North Brunswick Street in the north city after 9am today while gardaí and an Army bomb disposal team attended to the package.

Roads surrounding the school were temporarily closed while the operation took place.

A Defence Forces spokesman said the team arrived at the scene at 10am and that a Hobo robot was used to examine the package. The area was made safe a short time later, and the package was deemed an "elaborate hoax".

The nearby district courts complex was also evacuated.
