Bolton Wanderers have been promoted to the lucrative English Premiership following their three nil win over Preston North End in the English First Division play-off at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff today.

Gareth Farrelly's 20-metre shot after 16 minutes and late efforts from Michael Ricketts and Ricardo Gardner gave Bolton Wanderers victory over Lancashire rivals Preston.

Bolton, earning a return to the premier league following relegation in 1998, had lost in the play-offs over the last two seasons but were the better side for most of the match.

Dean Holdsworth had also gone close twice, while Preston, who were anonymous in the first half as they sought a return to the top flight for the first time in 40 years, had only a sharp David Healy shot to show for their second-half fightback.
