A parish priest who was given administrative leave from his parish in Lifford, Co Donegal, last Octoher appeared in court in Derry yesterday on 19 charges of sexually abusing two young boys.

Father Edward Kilpatrick (51) faces four charges of indecently assaulting a young boy between March 1st, 1975, and December 31st, 1976, in Derry. He is also charged with 11 similar offences and four counts of gross indecency against a second boy in Derry between August, 1977, and August, 1981.

The defendant, who arrived in the Magistrate's Court in a police car, wore his clerical suit and collar. Inside the courtroom were three other priests and several of his parishioners, among them Senator Paddy McGowan, of Fianna Fail.

The police officer in charge of the case, Det Insp Robert Paul, told the Resident Magistrate, Mr Des Perry, that he formally charged the accused man with the offences shortly before the court hearing. In answer to each of the 19 charges, the accused man replied: "I deny that charge."

The witness said he believed he could connect the accused man with the charges and asked for a remand to enable him to complete his inquiries. "Although the accused lives outside the jurisdiction, we are satisfied that he will answer his bail and attend for his trial", he said.

The magistrate told the accused priest, who was flanked by two police officers: "You will be released on bail, your own bail of £500, and you are to make no attempt to contact any of the alleged injured parties in this case by any means whatsoever. Do you fully understand that?"

The defendant replied: "I do." He is to appear before the same court for a preliminary inquiry on February 5th.

After his brief court appearance Father Kilpatrick spoke to reporters outside the courthouse.

"I would just like to make a brief comment", he said. "First of all, as I said last October when I stepped down from my parish, and last December when I met my parishioners, I totally and categorically deny the allegations made against me. Secondly, guided by my legal adviser, Mr Barra McGrory, it is my firm intention to contest and fight these charges made against me. That's all I have to say.
