British police have confirmed that a body found in a car in a river in Cambridgeshire on Wednesday is that of missing Whitemoor prison officer, Mr Peter Curran.

However, they added they had found nothing to suggest a connection between Mr Curran's death and that of another Whitemoor prison officer, Ms Marcia Whitehurst, with an attempted break-out by six prisoners, including five IRA men, from the prison two years ago.

Mr Curran (38) and Ms Whitehurst (37) were both found dead in their cars at the bottom of rivers near the prison. Mr Curran was found dead in his car at the bottom of a river at Chatteris on Wednesday, two years after going missing.

His disappearance also came six months after the IRA break-out, and his widow Christine suspects that he might have been killed because of what he knew about the escape.

Ms Whitehurst died when her car plunged into a river near March last month. She had been on her way to give evidence at the escapees trial in London when the accident happened. The trial was later abandoned because of prejudicial reporting.

Mr Mick Gipp, the traffic inspector investigating both deaths, said the evidence suggested Mr Curran and Ms Whitehurst had coincidentally died in similar accidents.
