The Southern Health Board yesterday rejected claims that there was a beds crisis at the accident and emergency department of Cork University Hospital. However, it warned patients attending the unit that they could expect lengthy delays.
A SHB spokesperson confirmed that 24 patients were waiting on trolleys for beds at the department yesterday. The department was experiencing a particularly busy spell but all patients would be treated.
The hospital's director of nursing, Ms Kay O'Sullivan, said the influx of patients was equally divided between those presenting with medical problems, such as flu, and those with surgical complaints, such as broken bones.
She said people such as those suffering from flu should avail of the services of their general practitioners.
Last week, an elderly woman from Youghal who was suffering from a fractured pelvic bone spent five hours in a wheelchair at the department before being discharged because there was no bed available.
