Pools of blood discovered in Ballygarron Wood, near Waterford Regional Airport, may be connected to the disappearance of Mr Martin Nolan (34) from Newtown, Tramore, who has been missing since last week.

Forensic and DNA tests are being carried out on what are described as extensive blood stains discovered in the wood.

Although gardai are officially treating the case as a missing person one, it is believed Mr Nolan may have been abducted and subjected to considerable violence.

Mr Nolan was due to appear at Waterford Circuit Court on Tuesday to face a charge of possessing several thousand pounds worth of cannabis and ecstasy for sale or supply in Waterford last year.

He has previous convictions and gardai in Waterford city confirmed last night that he was "known" to them.

He was last seen at about 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10th, and was reported missing two days later. The report was made by his partner with whom he has a son and a daughter.

That same day, foresters came across the blood-stained scene at Ballygarron Wood, adjacent to Waterford Regional Airport on the road between Tramore and Waterford. The blood - later confirmed in forensic tests as human - was found in patches at the scene, consistent with a serious injury taking place.

The scene has been sealed off and is being combed for evidence. No weapon which may have caused an injury has been found.

Supt Michael McGarry of Waterford Garda station, who is leading the investigation, said "we are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone who saw Mr Nolan after 6.30 p.m. on Friday, or anyone who may have treated someone with an injury."

Supt McGarry said his disappearance may be unrelated to the blood, but the unusual circumstances meant they were being investigated together.

When last seen, Mr Nolan was wearing black combat pants and a navy/black fleece with a hood. He is described as approximately 6 ft, of medium build with brown hair and a round face.
