A US soldier was killed and another wounded today when a homemade bomb exploded near a military camp in southern Philippines, a military official said.

Nine Filipinos were also injured in the blast which occurred around 8.40 p.m. local time in Zamboanga. No other details were available immediately.

About 1,000 US soldiers took part in a six-month military exercise, which ended in July, to help Philippine soldiers fight Muslim rebels operating in the country's south.

Some US military engineers stayed behind to help finish infrastructure projects on nearby Basilan island believed to be the stronghold of Muslim guerrillas.
