Port Of Spain - Members of Trinidad's Jamaat Al Muslimeen sect have obtained a lease from the government to occupy land from which they were nearly evicted in 1990 before mounting a bloody uprising to keep their homes.
The Port of Spain City Council has agreed to give the group a 25-year lease with an option to renew for a further 25 years on the 8.8-acre tract west of the city. Thirty-four people were killed in an uprising and attempted coup that resulted from the government's attempt to evict members of the Black Muslim group from the land in July of 1990.
