Osama bin Laden phoned his mother on the eve of the US terror attacks to tell her that he could not meet her because "something big" was imminent that would end their communications for a long time, it was reported today.
Osama bin Laden: phoned his mother on the eve of attacks
|
The
New York Times
said the account was obtained through an interrogation of bin Laden's family in Saudi Arabia.
An official told the newspaper that the phone call to bin Laden's mother in Syria did not come to light until after the attacks and was uncovered only as investigators for a foreign intelligence agency searched for evidence.
Bin Laden's mother, a member of the Alawite sect in Syria, took the phone call from her son in Afghanistan while she was on holiday in Damascus, where she has met him in the past, the official said.
After she returned home to Saudi Arabia on September 12th and learned of the terrorist attacks in the US she and members of her party were questioned by police.
