LIBERTAS CAMPAIGN:ANTI-LISBON Treaty group Libertas will target Taoiseach Brian Cowen in a billboard and poster campaign due to be rolled out later this week.

The advertisement features a photograph of Mr Cowen alongside the slogan: “The only job Lisbon saves is his. Vote No.”

A spokesman for Libertas said it would feature on 40-50 billboards and “several thousand” posters.

During last year’s treaty campaign, Libertas was criticised for running personalised billboard adverts attacking politicians.

Last weekend Libertas founder Declan Ganley announced he would campaign for a No vote despite vowing to abandon politics following his unsuccessful attempt to win a seat in the European Parliament elections in June.

Sinn Féin, which is campaigning against the treaty, also had a poster launch yesterday. Unlike Yes campaigners, Sinn Féin references clauses in the treaty to underpin its No stance with facts, claimed the party’s vice-president Mary Lou McDonald.

The posters equate ratification of the treaty with lower wages, higher military spending, less representation in the EU Parliament and “crushing” family-run farms.

“In recent years, the European Commission has enacted policies and the European Court of Justice has made judgments that have the effect of driving down the cost of wages in a number of EU countries,” Ms McDonald said.
