Between Each Line of Pain and Glory: My Life Story by Gladys Knight (Vista, £6.99 in UK)

Gladys Knight is one of the dominant figures in soul music

Gladys Knight is one of the dominant figures in soul music. She and her group, the Pips, have been consistently successful since the early 1960s, when they first reached the top 10 of the pop charts with Every Beat of My Heart. Her autobiography starts badly - all breathless excitement and banality - but becomes increasingly sharp and honest. She doesn't hold back in her criticisms, painting uncomplimentary portraits of Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross (with her "stretch-limo smile") and others. Knight is at her best describing the dodgy dealings of Berry Gordy and Motown. A short, absorbing book.
