Former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger has called on the sport to rediscover a sense of unpredictability if it is to halt the recent slump in interest.

Berger - who drove for Ferrari and McLaren before taking charge of BMW's Formula One engine project - claims grand prix weekends have been ruined by a lack of overtaking in races, prompting viewers to switch off after a handful of laps.

But the Austrian admits there is no simple solution to the problem and wants the sport's rule-makers to discuss the possibilities openly.

He said: "The thing that needs to be done now is to put down in writing various approaches, and to have people who know the business select those that advance our sport.
