Newcastle expect to have striker Craig Bellamy back in action in a fortnight. There was bad news for central defender Titus Bramble, however, who has been found to have a tear in his hamstring and could be sidelined for the next three weeks.
Bellamy has been back in Colorado to see top American surgeon Dr Richard Steadman about the knee he operated on in the summer.
The Wales striker has missed Newcastle's last three games after saying he could feel some problem with his knee.
Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson said this afternoon: "Bellamy has arrived back today and the news is pretty good.
"He does not need an operation and he should be back in action in around two weeks. But the surgeon does suggest that Bellamy only plays one game per week."
The news about Bramble is not so good after the former Ipswich defender limped off after only 27 minutes in Tuesday's Champions League victory over Dynamo Kiev at St James' Park.
"Bramble has a tear in his hamstring which will keep him out for three weeks and this is a shame because he has only just got back into the side," Robson added.
"He has done very well and has looked an assured player and this injury has come at a bad time for him and the club."
Newcastle also lost central defender Andy O'Brien with back spasms at half-time on Tuesday night and the Republic of Ireland defender is doubtful for Monday night's game with Middlesbrough at St James' Park.
