New York - The former US Congresswoman, Ms Bella Abzug, a feminist with a passionate and outspoken style, died yesterday, aged 77, her spokesman said. Ms Abzug underwent heart surgery three weeks ago and died from complications in a New York hospital, the spokesman said.
A pioneer in the contemporary feminist movement, Ms Abzug first ran for Congress in 1970 with the slogan, "A woman's place is in the house - the House of Representatives." Unmistakable with her distinctive Bronx accent, trademark large-brimmed hats, and aggressive full-throttle style, the liberal Democrat served in Congress from 1971 to 1977.
