Belarus president confirmed as election winner

Belarus's election commission today confirmed the re-election of President Mr Alexander Lukashenko.

Belarus's election commission today confirmed the re-election of President Mr Alexander Lukashenko.

It said Mr Lukashenko received 75.6 per cent of the vote in the former Soviet state.

Mr Lukashenko, criticised in the West for his poor human rights record, had already claimed victory just over an hour after polls closed in the election, which opposition politicians said was rigged.

"We have checked the data several times, the percentage shows huge support and speaks of a decisive victory for President Alexander Lukashenko," head of the Central Election Commission Ms Lidiya Yermoshina said on state television. She said all ballots had been counted.

But a senior official from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said the election had not been democratic.

"It was not democratic. I would not use the words free and fair," said Mr Hrair Balian of OSCE, which monitored yesterday's controversial election.

"This was due to the pre-election environment," Mr Balian said. The OSCE was due to hold a news conference later on today to make a detailed statement.
