Bassett tipped for Leicester post

Dave Bassett looks set to be confirmed as Leicester City's new manager in the next 24 hours.

Dave Bassett looks set to be confirmed as Leicester City's new manager in the next 24 hours.

Speculation is rife that the former Nottingham Forest and Wimbledon boss will be confirmed as Peter Taylor's successor.

Bassett was tonight in the directors' box at the Worthington Cup tie between Coventry and Chelsea, with the latter being Leicester's opponents in the Premiership on Saturday.

Local television reports are already claiming the man, known as Houdini because of his ability to pull off great escapes with his various clubs, has tied up a deal.

It appears that City have made a move for Bassett after Harry Redknapp and George Graham had been the early favourites to take over from Taylor.

Redknapp distanced himself from moving from Portsmouth, where he is director of football, at the weekend while Graham is still to tie up a satisfactory compensation claim against his former club Tottenham whom he left last season.

Leicester officials tonight refused to confirm or deny a press conference will be held tomorrow to confirm Bassett's appointment.

If he does take over, he will face a mammoth task to revive City's fortunes as they are currently lying bottom of the Premiership with only one victory in eight games.

Reserve team coach Garry Parker was in charge of the side for Tuesday night's Worthington Cup tie with Leeds United at Filbert Street.

But the indications were tonight that his reign in the hot seat would last only 90 minutes although he claimed on Monday that his future at the club is secure whoever steps into Taylor's shoes. -Reuters
