Basque police have prevented Basque separatists from paying homage at the funeral of an ETA member killed in Bilbao last week when a bomb he was transporting exploded.

Local police diverted a funeral procession of 15 cars from entering Renteria, in northern Spain's Basque region, where a group of Basque separatists, with Basque flags, were preparing to pay homage to Egoitz Gurrutxaga, killed on September 23rd.

However, Gurrutxaga's funeral went off without incident, police said.

Gurrutxaga was killed, along with another ETA member Odei Galarraga, when the car they were in exploded in Bilbao, capital of Spain's Basque region.

Police said the two were transporting a bomb when it accidentally went off.

They found the two badly disfigured bodies, handguns, false license plates and a remote detonator at the scene of the explosion on Bilbao's outskirts.

The day after, a police officer was killed and three others injured in the northern province of Navarra while removing a pro-ETA sign.

ETA has claimed responsibility for the attack.
