Tehran - An Iranian court has lifted a ban against a reformist newspaper and upheld an appeal by its publisher, Iran's official news agency IRNA said yesterday. The publisher had been convicted last year by a hardline press court.
The action comes as welcome news for President Mohammad Khatami's reformist camp ahead of the presidential polls on June 8th, in which he will stand for reelection. Several new independent dailies have hit Iranian news stands ahead of the election, but there have been no indications that bans on some 30 other publications might be lifted.
