Bail refused in Belfast drug case

A man was charged in Belfast yesterday with possessing drugs worth £200,000

A man was charged in Belfast yesterday with possessing drugs worth £200,000. Mr Francis Alan McCloy (44), a trader from Black's Road Dunmurry, Belfast, was also charged with having cannabis resin with intent to supply.

The cannabis was found on Wednesday when the RUC stopped a car at Boucher Road, Belfast. A drugs squad detective, Mr Trevor Rodgers, said he believed he could connect Mr McCloy to the charges and objected to bail.

"Because of the nature and seriousness of the charges I fear the accused would abscond and not turn up for his trial if he was freed on bail", he said.

The resident magistrate, Mr Ian Bamford, said the amount involved was too much to make it a suitable case for bail. He remanded Mr McCloy in custody until November 15th.
