One of two men charged with a street assault which left a man on a life-support machine was freed on bail yesterday.
The second man is due before a court again today when a bail application will be made.
Anthony Carroll (23), unemployed, of St Attracta's Road, Cabra, and Michael Carroll (19), an apprentice carpenter, of Dominick Street, both Dublin, were charged with assault causing serious harm to Liam McGowan (22), an insurance industry worker from Kinlough in Leitrim. The two accused are not related.
Dublin District Court heard they were arrested at their homes on Wednesday morning. Neither replied after they were charged that evening.
Gardaí applied for substantial independent bail for both.
Det Sgt Gerard McDonnell said he was seeking a large surety because of the seriousness of the charge.
Mr McGowan was on a life-support machine in Beaumont Hospital, the officer said.
Judge Cormac Dunne fixed bail for Anthony Carroll at €11,000, with €7,500 to be lodged in cash. Bail for Michael Carroll was set at €15,000, with half in cash.
The judge accepted Anthony Carroll's uncle, Edward, and his wife Michelle, as independent bailspersons and he was freed after €7,500 in cash was lodged with the court.
Michael Carroll's employer initially agreed to act as bailsman, but withdrew after the judge insisted he would have to put up half of the money in cash.
Judge Dunne agreed to consider varying Michael Carroll's bail terms today after his solicitor, Fiona Brennan, said a number of members of the family had agreed to come together and put up €20,000 cash bail.
The judge ordered that as part of his bail terms, Anthony Carroll will have to sign on twice daily at his local Garda station, observe a 9.30pm to 6am curfew, reside at the Cabra address and surrender his passport.
He is to appear in Cloverhill District Court on September 14th.
Michael Carroll was remanded in custody to appear in Dublin District Court again today.
