Britain's BAE Systems said today it hoped to use voluntary redundancies to cut nearly 600 jobs from two sites in England.

Europe's largest defence contractor is cutting 134 jobs from its Woodford site near Manchester and 450 jobs from Brough, near Hull on the east coast.

Brough is the main manufacturing centre for BAE's Hawk trainer jet, and it had been hoping for an order from the United Arab Emirates that failed to materialise.

BAE said it was looking at ways to redeploy workers.
