A verdict of death from misadventure was recorded at an inquest yesterday into how a baby boy who was deprived of oxygen during the second stage of labour was born in a poor condition and died 10 days after his delivery by emergency Caesarean section.

Baby Jayden Geraghty of Greenhills Estate, Ballina, Co Mayo, was “flat” and pale when delivered by a “difficult” Caesarean section at Mayo General Hospital on the evening of January 23rd, 2008.

The baby’s mother, Kathleen Geraghty, who had a Caesarean section at the birth of her first child due to foetal distress, told the inquest that she asked different doctors and nurses several times for a Caesarean section. “I pleaded with them for a C section, but no one was listening,” she told the inquest.

None of the doctors or nurses who attended on Ms Geraghty recall her asking for a section and there are no notes indicating that was the case, the court heard.

Before the birth Ms Geraghty was told by her consultant she was to have a natural birth and she said she agreed if they believed it was the “best way”, she said.
