A woman gave birth to a baby girl in an ambulance outside the Coombe Hospital yesterday morning following a frantic dash from Trim Garda Station.

The saga began at around 2.30 a.m. when a woman from Ballivor, Co Meath was rushed into the Garda station in an advanced state of labour.

An ambulance crew summonsed to pick up the woman realised that the baby's arrival was imminent, so a Garda drove the ambulance to the hospital while they tended to the woman in the back.

The ambulance was escorted by a patrol car en route.
