British Airways staff at Heathrow are returning to work after another unofficial walkout plunged up to 80,000 passengers' travel plans into chaos.

A BA spokeswoman said: "Staff are starting to return across the terminals and we are talking to the unions."

Workers were returning as a gesture of goodwill to passengers, a union source said.

The spokeswoman said services would still be cancelled but the airline was constantly receiving information and decisions were being made on a rolling basis.

The industrial action hit some long-haul flights but mostly affected a host of popular European holiday destinations including Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Holland. All 360 flights, both incoming and outgoing, from Terminal One, were cancelled.

The unofficial strike began yesterday when about 250 check-in staff in Terminal One walked out over plans to introduce a new electronic method of signing in and out for work. It came just as the summer holiday season moved into full swing.
