A cinema which was badly damaged in the floods of November 2009 has won an award as Ireland’s best independent cinema.

Carrick Cineplex in Carrick-on-Shannon was flooded to eight inches when the river Shannon burst its banks during torrential rain that month.

The floods caused hundreds of thousands of euro worth of damage and the cinema closed for five months.

Carrick Cineplex beat off competition from movies@ Dundrum and movies@Gorey to win the London RAAM Award for best Irish independent cinema. Cinema owner Liam Farrell said the award vindicated their decision to keep going.
