Australia's trade deficit quadrupled to $320 million (€183 million) in April as exports slumped by three per cent, according to official statistics released today.
The Bureau of Statistics data showed the April deficit, which was the sixth in succession, up from $79 million in March.
Exports slipped $361 million to $12.54 billion as rural shipments declined three per cent or $72 million, non-rural exports fell two per cent or $123 million and services declined six per cent or $166 million.
Imports of goods and services fell by $120 million to $12.86 billion, despite a rise of four per cent or $117 million rise in consumer goods imports and a four per cent or $93 million rise in capital goods.
Imports of intermediate and other goods dropped six per cent or $314 million, the bureau said.
