An Australian woman died of heatstroke while travelling in a crowded train through the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said today.
A spokesman for the Australian high commission in New Delhi, said 25-year-old Kelly Jane Smart, from Sydney, was travelling with a Swedish friend on the Bundelkhand Express to the Hindu holy town of Varanasi on Saturday.
"She suffered a fatal heatstroke on Saturday while travelling and died before we could organise any medical air rescue from... New Delhi," he said.
He added that the incident could prompt the Australian high commission to issue a travel advisory warning tourists about the heat during the Indian summer.
At least 1,432 people have died in India since rising temperatures engulfed the country's Gangetic plains in mid-May.
Fifty of the heatwave deaths were reported from Uttar Pradesh state which has been reeling under temperatures of up to 44 degrees Celsius (112 Fahrenheit).
