Australians have gathered for a national memorial service for victims of the Bali bombings as politicians, family members and tourists filed into parliament.

Prime Minister Mr John Howard and the nation's religious leaders led about 1,000 Australians, foreign diplomats and visiting schoolchildren in parliament's Great Hall, offering prayers for the victims and calling for justice.

More than 100 family members of Australians killed in the bombings laid flowers in a Balinese water pool as they entered parliament's marble lobby and queued to light candles for their loved ones as a lone piper played "Amazing Grace".

"This terrible event has taught us something of the world in which we live. It has told us in a brutal and cruel fashion that terror's reach is potentially everywhere," the prime minister told the gathered mourners.
