A meeting aimed at resolving the unofficial industrial action by refuse collectors on the southside of Dublin city will be held on Sunday, in the hope of restoring normal services by Monday.

About 100 refuse collectors and van operators, working out of the Rathmines and Davitt Road depots, have been working to rule since the beginning of the week. The effect, according to a spokesman for the Rathmines depot, has been to "slow down" collections with the result that business and domestic rubbish collections are"about a day behind". The Bow Street depot, which covers the city centre, is not affected.

The dispute, between Dublin Corporation and the unions SIPTU and IMPACT, arises over payments due to cleansing operatives after a reorganisation of the refuse collection across the city by Dublin Corporation. The reorganisation has taken a number of vans off the roads, meaning longer routes and greater flexibility in working hours demanded of the operatives. SIPTU and IMPACT will put a motion to its members on Sunday, seeking an early meeting with the Corporation to resolve the issues and to return to normal working practices in the meantime.
