A petrol bomb attack on the home of an independent member of a district policing partnership in Co Derry was today denounced as the work of cowards.
Yvonne Hutchinson’s house in Leckagh Drive, Magherafelt was targeted at around 1.30am yesterday morning.
Police responding to the incident also came under attack with bricks and stones.
The petrol bomb struck a shed at the back of Ms Hutchinson’s home while the window of her car was also smashed in the early morning incident.
Sir Desmond Rea, chairman of the Policing Board, branded the attack as cowardly and despicable.
“All members of DPPs work hard for our community and make a significant contribution to policing and the safety of our community,” he said.
“The fact that officers who attended the scene were also attacked is appalling, and I am relieved that no-one was injured.
“The people who are responsible for this have nothing to offer our society and such attacks achieve nothing.”
The Police Service confirmed it was investigating the attack.
“We can confirm that a petrol bomb was thrown at the shed at a property at the Leckagh Drive area of Magherafelt at 1.30am yesterday morning,” a spokeswoman said.
“While attending the scene, officers were attacked with stones and bricks.
“The rear window of a car at the same property was broken during the same incident.”
