Athenry were crowned the Connacht Senior Hurling champions today after comprehensively defeating Roscommon by 1-19 to 0-9 in the final.
Eugene Cloonan was instrumental for Athenry, scoring eight points, seven of which were frees. David Donoghue scored the only goal of the game. Athenry took a 0-9 to 0-3 lead into the break.
Elsewhere, Sixmilebridge were narrow victors by 2-13 to 1-15 over Blackrock in a nail-biting Munster Senior Hurling semi-final this afternoon.
Sixmilebridge trailed their opponents by 1-5 to 1-8 at half-time, but the Clare club scored four points without reply early in the second half to take the lead.
Niall Gilligan and Cyril Crowe scored the two goals for Sixmilebridge while David Cashman netted for Blackrock.
Although Blackrock were one point ahead with five minutes to go, Sixmilebridge finished strongly and substitute Paul Fitzpatrick scored the winning point in the second minute of injury time.
