At least six people were killed and some 35 others injured when a bus carrying students to a religious summer camp slammed head on into an embankment on a highway east of Dallas today.

Police said helicopters were flying about 15 people to area trauma centers and another 20 have been taken to hospitals by ambulance, they said. About 50 people were on board the bus.

"At least six people have been killed and there are numerous injuries to other persons," said Ms Lisa Block of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Police said details were still sketchy but they believed the bus was carrying students from Garland, a suburb east of Dallas, to a church retreat in Louisiana when it struck an embankment under a bridge on Interstate 20, about 30 miles east of Dallas.
