AN assistant matron in Mallow General Hospital, Co Cork, who had been suspended a year ago, settled her High Court action against the Southern Health Board yesterday.

Ms Veronica McNamara, Fellsway, Boreemanna Road, Cork, had claimed there was a campaign of attrition against her by certain management personnel.

Mrs Justice McGuinness made an order, following agreement between the parties, removing the suspension imposed on Ms McNamara on October 13th, 1995.

Last December Ms McNamara was granted permission to challenge the SHB's decision to suspend her. She also got an order restraining the board from removing her from employment.

In an affidavit Ms McNamara said while she was acting matron she implemented a new staff roster. On April 2nd, 1993, she had a phone call from Mr Gerry O'Dwyer, services manager of the Southern Health Board, who informed her she was to "drop the issue" as the nurses' organisations were angered by the roster.

He told her she would not be doing her career any good by persisting with such action. "From this point on I say and believe that a campaign of attrition was brought against me by certain management personnel in relation to my position," she said.

Mr Gerry Tynan SC, for Ms McNamara said that by consent a number of orders could be made, including an order to quash a notice purporting to be issued under the Health (Removal of Officers and Servants) Regulations 1971.
