It is the second tragedy to hit the family following the death of a second son, Alan, who was killed in a car accident while playing near his home a number of years ago.

His father, a taxi-driver, had campaigned for the introduction of traffic-calming measures in the Moyross area.

Thomas Maloney, who worked in a well-known butcher shop, Noel O'Connor's, in the city centre, had been in Dublin on a weekend visit.

Mr Tim O'Driscoll, a former city councillor and friend of the family, said Thomas was popular and a hard worker.

The community was united in its grief following the news of the man's death from head injuries.

"We hope the perpetrators of this wicked attack are brought to justice quickly," said Mr O'Driscoll.
