Scottish artist Callum Innes won the £26,000 NatWest Art Prize in 1998 and is one of the few painters to have been short-listed for the Turner Prize in recent years. Yet unlike the pyrotechnical paintings of last year's Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili, Innes's work is very quiet and understated, achieved as much by taking paint off the canvas as by putting it on.
With his often monochromatic, introspective abstracts he aims to break down the distance between contemporary painting and its potential audience by inviting intimate, concentrated attention from the viewer.
A selection of his new and recent work opens at IMMA on Wednesday.
