An illegal plant with the capacity to launder 20 million litres of fuel per year has been uncovered by Revenue officials and gardaí today.

A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the operation located at Drumacon, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

Some 37,000 litres of laundered fuel, about 200 bags of bleaching agent, two tankers and a van were found at the plant this morning. Officers also uncovered three skips of toxic waste at the site.

A Revenue spokesman said the plant had the capacity to launder up to 20 million litres of fuel per year which would result in a potential loss to the Exchequer of €11 million annually.

The man arrested in relation to the discovery is being detained at Castleblaney Garda station.
