Workers in Arnotts department store in Dublin may go on strike in the run-up to Christmas, the trade union Siptu said today.
Siptu said it had served strike notice on Arnotts in a row over moving its Henry Street storerooms to Tallaght.
The union said industrial action will take place at the shop from Thursday, November 23rd next.
"The decision to take industrial action...follows a management decision to move much of the stockroom and storage capacity from Henry Street to Tallaght," SIPTU Branch Organiser, John Flannery, said.
"Most of our 57 store members are expected to move to the new location and to accept the introduction of a new shift-working pattern without agreement," he added.
He said despite months of talks, involving the Labour Relations Commission and the Labour Court, management at the shop had failed to come up with acceptable proposals.
The action will include a work to rule, a ban on overtime, work stoppages of limited duration or an indefinite strike with the placing of pickets on all Arnotts facilities.
"SIPTU is continuing to work with the Labour Relations Commission in an effort to get talks going again in the hope of avoiding a major industrial dispute in the run-up to the festive season when many people will be doing extra shopping," he concluded.
