Twelve people were killed today when the Yemeni army and police clashed with armed tribesmen from a village where suspected members of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda are thought to be hiding.
The clashes between the special forces and tribesmen from al-Hosun village in Marib province "left 12 people dead on both sides," a tribal dignitary said. "Several people were also wounded," he said.
A police official queried by AFPwould neither confirm nor deny the reported toll.
Earlier today, Yemeni troops and police backed by tanks and helicopters shelled al-Hosun, where they believe suspected members of bin Laden's al-Qaeda terror network may have taken refuge, tribal sources said.
