Two army officers have been arrested in Burundi in connection with the massacre last month of some 173 people, most of them civilians, President Pierre Buyoya has said.

It is understood they have been under arrest for more than a week.

The massacre took place on September 9th in the central town of Itaba.

One of those detained is the second-in-command of a commando battalion, the other is a junior officer. Both were on duty in Itaba at the time of the killings, a military source said.

"The investigation and the report are finished . . . and those who are to blame are in the hands of the law," said President Buyoya.

A number of armed Hutu rebel groups in Burundi have been fighting the Tutsi-dominated army since 1993 in a war that has killed over 250,000, with most being civilians.
