Irish army footballers today kick off the European Military Soccer Championships being held in Dublin this week.

Irish army footballers today kick off the European Military Soccer Championships being held in Dublin this week.

The opening ceremony will be held in Whitehall Football Club before the Ireland v Greece game this evening. The closing banquet takes place at Tolka Park on Thursday.

The Defence Forces team, which is competing for the first time, take on Holland and Greece.

The Conseil Internationale Du Sport Militaire(CISM) runs in Dublin from October 17th-19th.

The CISM, the official sports organisation for all military forces, was formed in 1948 and comprises over 127 member nations. Football was one of the first sports to be played in CISM, along with track and field and swimming.

The football competition comprises round robin series of games with the top team qualifying as European representative for the 2007 World Military games in India.
