Yerevan - The Armenian President, Mr Levon TerPetrossian, announced on television yesterday that he was resigning. "I was asked to resign and I accepted and I present my resignation," said Mr Ter-Petrossian, in office since 1991 and re-elected in September 1996, with 51.75 per cent of the votes.
The resignation follows a split in the government over a proposed peace settlement in the disputed Nagorno Karabakh region.
