Armed police could travel on British planesUndercover armed police could travel on British passenger flights to prevent terrorists hijacking planes.

Amid heightened fears about random attacks by terrorists, Home Secretary David Blunkett and Transport Secretary Alistair Darling are considering proposals to place 'sky marshals' on major airlines.

The idea is one of the recommendations in a report by former Conservative minister Sir John Wheeler.

Although a summary of the report was published last month, the idea of 'sky marshals' was not disclosed.

Under the plans, airlines could be asked to contribute to the cost, The Sunday Timesreported. A similar scheme in Australia costs nearly €1 billion a year.
