Armed anti-war protestor arrested outside Dail

A man who gardai say was an anti-war protestor was arrested this afternoon outside the Dail in possession of a knife.

A man who gardai say was an anti-war protestor was arrested this afternoon outside the Dail in possession of a knife.

The man is due to appear in Dublin District Court this evening to be charged with possession of an offensive weapon under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, along with offences under the Public Order Act.

He was arrested on Kildare Street at 12.45pm under the Public Order Act, and was brought to Pearse Street Garda station.

In a separate incident, members of the anti-war Dublin Catholic Workers group staged a two hour peaceful vigil outside Aviation House, the headquarters of the Irish Aviation Authority on Hawkins Street in Dublin.

The group were protesting at what they alleged to be Irish government complicity in the ongoing war on Iraq.

At one stage a member of the group occupied the foyer of the building, where he erected a shrine and recited prayers. He was later removed by Gardai, though no arrests were made.
