JEWELLERY WITH a value believed to run to tens of thousands of euro was stolen in a robbery in Arklow, Co Wicklow, in the early hours of yesterday morning, The robbery occurred at Millennium jewellers on Upper Main Street, with the thieves gaining entry by breaking a hole in the wall from the premises next door.
The adjoining newsagent has been closed since before Christmas. The robbers camouflaged their plans by using it as a cover to rob the Millennium jewellers.
The glass panel in the door was smashed to gain entry to the vacant newsagent premises and then the thieves broke a hole in the dividing wall.
The jewellery theft was only discovered when the break-in at the newsagents was being investigated yesterday morning.
The robbers are believed to have dropped a ring in the newsagent shop when making their escape.
Gardaí investigating the robbery are examining CCTV footage and they are also appealing to the public to contact them at 0402-32304 if they have any information that might help solve the crime.
